Interlaken sits in one of the more meteorologically interesting positions in the Alps, tucked into the valley between Lake Thun to the west and Lake Brienz to the east, with the Bernese Oberland's peaks rising steeply on all sides. That geography shapes everything about how weather behaves here. The two lakes moderate temperatures somewhat, keeping winters less severe than you might expect at this elevation and summers warm rather than just tolerable. Humidity sits steadily around 70% year-round, which gives Interlaken's air a crispness in winter and a slight weight on August afternoons, though nothing like the soupy heat of lower-lying Swiss cities. The seasonal pattern follows classic Alpine rhythms: cold, sometimes snowy winters; a wet and increasingly warm spring; a warm and frequently showery summer. And a crisp autumn before the cold settles back in. The wettest stretch runs from May through August, when afternoon thunderstorms are a reliable feature of warm days. July and August each bring around 145mm of rain, which sounds like a lot but mostly means brief, dramatic downpours rather than days of grey drizzle. February is the driest month at 66mm, and even then Interlaken is hardly arid. What makes Interlaken's weather distinctive is the contrast between the valley floor and the mountains immediately above it. On a clear January morning, the town itself might sit at 3°C (37°F), while Schilthorn or Kleine Scheidegg are buried under fresh powder. That vertical range, from lakeside strolls to glaciated terrain within a 30-minute gondola ride, means the weather you experience depends enormously on where you go, not just when you arrive.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Adventure and Hiking
late June through September offers the most reliable conditions. The high Alpine trails clear of snow by July, temperatures at valley level reach 22-24°C (72-75°F), and the long days give you maximum time on the mountain. June can still surprise you with late-season snow above 2,000 metres, so check conditions before heading up to the higher stations.
Winter Sports
January and February are the prime months. The ski resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen, and Mürren run at full capacity, snow conditions in the high bowls tend to be most reliable, and the valley itself has a festive, cozy atmosphere. March can still deliver excellent skiing, on north-facing runs, while accommodation rates begin to ease.
Cultural Exploration and Sightseeing
May and September are arguably the sweet spots. May brings the valley to life with spring greenery before the summer rush, while September offers lingering warmth with noticeably thinner crowds and a quality of Alpine light that photographers travel specifically to catch.
Budget-Conscious Travel
November, early December, and March. These shoulder months sit outside the two main tourism peaks, so accommodation rates drop, popular attractions are accessible without queuing, and Interlaken takes on a more lived-in, local character.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Interlaken.

Year-Round Essentials
A packable waterproof jacket
rainfall is fairly evenly distributed across the year, and even the driest months see regular showers.
Layers
the temperature difference between the valley floor and the high mountain stations can span 10 to 15 degrees within a short gondola ride.
Sturdy walking shoes with ankle support
serve across all four seasons, from summer hiking trails to icy winter streets.
Sunscreen and sunglasses
UV exposure increases significantly at altitude, and winter glare off snow is intense even on overcast days.
A small daypack
carries layers, water, and rain gear without weighing you down on excursions.
spring (March through May)
Clothing
a mid-weight fleece or wool sweater as a base layer, a waterproof outer shell, versatile trousers that can handle both town walks and muddy trail edges
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots earn their place if you plan to head above the valley floor.
Accessories
Light gloves, a warm hat are still useful through April
summer (June through August)
Clothing
light cotton and technical fabrics work for warm days, a packable rain layer accessible for afternoon storms, a light jacket or hoodie for cool evenings
Footwear
Trail shoes or hiking boots for anyone heading up to the mountain stations.
autumn (September through November)
Clothing
a mix of lighter layers for September's lingering warmth, warm mid-layers as October and November close in, a waterproof jacket with a proper warm liner
Accessories
Insulated gloves, a hat from late October onwards
winter (December through February)
Clothing
proper thermal base layers, a warm insulated jacket, a waterproof outer shell for ski days or mountain excursions, warm socks
Accessories
Grip-attachment devices such as microspikes are useful for icy town streets in January and February
Plug Type
Type J, three round pins arranged in a triangular pattern
Voltage
230V at 50Hz
Adapter Note
Most modern devices handle 230V automatically. But check anything older before plugging in. UK and US visitors need adaptors, and worth noting that standard Type C two-pin European adaptors do not fit Swiss sockets, a universal adaptor is the practical choice.
Skip These Items
Leave the blazer at home. Interlaken lives outdoors, stays casual, and even the pricier tables welcome jeans. Skip the brolly. Gusts off the peaks will flip it inside out. A shell jacket beats wind and rain. Sandals? Only for the hotel shower. Trails shift from gravel to scree. Closed shoes rule. July tops out at 24°C (75°F). Pack light tees, yes, but stash a fleece. Nights bite back.
